Ümit Şahin is a Senior Expert and Climate Change Studies Coordinator at Istanbul Policy Centre. Şahin lectures on Global Environmental Problems, Climate Change and Environmental Policies at Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and is also a member of the Climate Change Jury of the Mercator-IPM Fellowship Programme.
Şahin has been involved in the green political movement, climate, ecology, environment, anti-nuclear and human rights movements since the early 1990s. Founded in 2003, he was the editor-in-chief of Üç Ekoloji magazine.
He was the president of the Association of Physicians for the Environment between 2002 and 2006 He was among the founders of the Green Party in Turkey, which was established in 2008, and was its co-spokesperson between 2010 and 2012 He was the coordinator of the Turkey Sign Kyoto! Campaign launched by the Greens in 2007, Şahin has been attending the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COPs) as an observer since 2008 He is currently a member of the Executive Board of the
Istanbul City Council for the 2019-2021 term.
Şahin, who has been preparing and presenting the programme Açık Yeşil (Open Green) on Açık Radyo with Ömer Madra since 2008, is also a writer and editor on climate and environmental issues for Yeşil Gazete. Şahin has written and edited books such as "Why We Can't Wait Any Longer: Global Warming and Climate Crisis", 2007 (co-edited
with Ömer Madra), "Green Economy", 2012 (co-edited with Ahmet Atıl Aşıcı), "Açık Yeşil 1 - An Ecology Guide with Theory and Practice", 2019 and "Açık Yeşil 2 - Climate Crisis, Politics and Activism", 2020 (co-edited with Ömer Madra). Şahin also has several book chapters, reports and articles on climate change, energy transition, environmental health, green politics and human rights.
Ümit Şahin graduated from Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1991, completed his master's degree at the Hadassah Braun
School of Public Health of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and received his doctorate in public health from Istanbul University in
2000 His public health studies have focused on environmental health.
